Jama (Payable / Credit)·جمع

Roman Urdu: Jama / Jama Hona

Jama is the traditional bahi-khata word for the CREDIT side of a party's account — a payable, i.e. money the adhati owes the party. A common case is a farmer (kissan) whose produce has been sold but not yet paid out: the sale proceeds sit on the jama side of their khata until settled. In mandi speech 'tumhara jama hai' means 'this much is credited to you — I owe it to you'. In modern accounting terms, jama = a payable / creditor balance, and is the mirror image of naam.

Example usage

Example: the munshi prepares the jama (payable / credit) and shares it with the buyer or driver on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked: Jama (Payable / Credit)

What is the difference between jama and naam?+
They are the two sides of a party's khata. Jama is a payable — you owe the party (e.g. a farmer's unpaid sale proceeds). Naam is a receivable — the party owes you (e.g. a buyer's udhaar). A single party can have both over time, and the net balance is naam minus jama.
Why does a farmer's sale sit on the jama side?+
Because once the kissan's lot is sold, the net proceeds belong to the kissan but are still with the adhati. Until the adhati pays out, that amount is a payable — it is credited (jama) to the farmer's khata so it is never forgotten at settlement.
How does Pakka Khata track jama balances?+
Every sale, advance and payment posts to the party khata, so each party shows a clear jama (payable) or naam (receivable) running balance. You always know who you owe (jama) and who owes you (naam), and can settle or send a statement on WhatsApp.
